Yarra valley - from wine and timber to tourism and wine

Prior to the founding of Healesville, a settlement at nearby New Chum had become a thriving base for miners and others en route to the goldfields at Woods Point and Jericho.

The first land sales in Healesville took place in June 1865, when the price of blocks of land started at one pound each. Twenty years later, the arrival of the railway led to increased visitors and in the 1920s Healesville was declared “The World-famed Tourist Resort”.

Healesville Sanctuary was founded in 1920 and the construction of the Maroondah Dam began in 1927 brought further investment to the town.

Eventually, the guest house and tourism boom era died away, as did the substantial timber industry which was heavily impacted by fires, in particular those in 1939.

Today, the Yarra Valley is known for its natural beauty, agriculture and as one of Australia's prominent wine-producing regions. Healesville is a vibrant place with many people contributing to the community across a wide range of interests.

Yesterday

Yarra Valley – a long history of contribution and connection

Contribution to the community was a key element of how First Nations people lived here for the past 60,000 years. With European settlement, this tradition continued. A good example is in community participation in bushfire management which began with the establishment of a volunteer brigade in 1894 and continues today in the CFA and SES.

Significant contributors in Healesville’s past

Healesville has produced many significant contributors. William Barak was the last traditional ngurungaeta known for his leadership, diplomatic skills, activism and as an artist. David Fleay founded the Healesville Sanctuary. Gracia Baylor was the first woman sworn into the Victorian Legislative Council. Healesville has produced some outstanding sportsmen including Ron Young in wood chopping, Juby Wandin and Gordon Collis in the AFL.

Healesville and Coranderrk – a connected history

Football offers a fascinating example of local connection. While the Healesville Football Club and Coranderrk Aboriginal station players did not formally merge, they had a history of competition and collaboration. When Coranderrk players were not allowed to play for Healesville due to the station manager's actions, it affected the match results and led to public condemnation.

Today

Today in Healesville, there is a strong sense of community and feeling of growing momentum. Healesville residents are volunteering their time and effort in over 50 community-based organisations working across the wide range of social, cultural and environmental issues.
